At home, my children and I have enjoyed her books with a passion. Learning about different historical figures, and how modern cuisine developed has been educational and has inspired my little chefs to be more engaged and participatory in our home kitchen. I recommend her curriculum and books for all children.
The illustrations are just awesome. The story is so interesting and engaging for adults and kids. Throughout the book we get fun facts and cooking terms that teach, and then at the end we get a bonus recipe that goes with the story! This book is a perfect tool for little chefs, fun and food! We loved it!
This was such a fun book! The art is so cute, the story was super fun for the younger kids and the older kids were so intrigued by the facts and I learned so much. We are going to try the recipe and all the various experiments for our science unit. We are excited to get the other books in the series.
BRING BOOKS TO LIFE WITH AN AUTHOR'S VISIT!
Chef Arlena Strode has developed a wonderful STEM curriculum for children that can be easily adapted for a classroom or library setting. She incorporates the reading of one of her picture book biographies about famous chefs paired with related activities. Arlena is passionate about her profession and sharing information about the pioneers that influenced modern cuisine with children. She chose little known influencers for her short biographical sketches including: Fannie Farmer, Escoffier, Leah Chase and Mary Mullen, aka “Typhoid Mary.” There are so many life lessons to be learned by studying the lives of these famous and infamous chefs.

Our youth group class with chef Arlena was amazing! She was knowledgeable and experienced. Everyone felt comfortable participating and knew what was expected from each chef in training while they practiced new skills and learned terminology. History and fun facts were presented through her book. It was interesting to see the actual kitchen in France, through video, that was mentioned in the book. Having an official apron helped our group take on a chef roll and elevated their behavior! Our results were delicious! It was a very rewarding activity!

I personally love her books. They are incredibly informative, but presented in a fun and engaging way. We were able to purchase classroom copies of one of her books for each class, which our teachers really appreciated.
Students and staff alike enjoyed having Arlena as a visiting guest speaker.
Not only did we learn something interesting about the history of cooking, but we also learned about possibility. We learned that we can have an idea, work hard, and make things happen. I highly recommend having Arlena visit your school to present. You won't regret it!
Chef Arlena’s visit to our school was just perfect! She captivated the attention of all students in grades K-5. She shared her knowledge of food history, the writing and publishing process, and love of the culinary field with our students. They were inspired by her enthusiasm and enjoyed listening to her presentation. I would have her back to my school in a heartbeat, one of the best author visits we’ve ever had!
Our 3rd-5th graders had the pleasure of having Chef Arlena present to our school. She kept the students entranced during her readings by engaging with them with thoughtful comments and questions. Chef Arlena enhanced the students experience by providing a writing prompt that students could reply to by either text or video. To celebrate with the students who completed the prompt, Chef Arlena then provided a personalized cooking experience for these students. We hope to have her back next year to read some of her other books.
